I'm thinking that the problem might lie in the fact that simply
cutting out the POINTS of the back plane polys of the generated
text causes the side extrusion polys to collapse into 2 point
polys that crash the stencil operation.  Select Polygon Select
Mode and click on Display then Stats.  See if there are ANY
1 or 2 point polys.  Click on the + button to select all of them
and then CUT them out, leaving just the single front flat polys
of the text.

The way to get rid of side and back polys of extruded objects
is NOT to delete the shared POINTS, but to simply select ALL
the polys of the text and then right-mouse lasso UN-SELECT
the front face polys from the SIDE view leaving the sides and
back polys selected and THEN cut.  This method doesn't
collapse polys.
